The high levels of biodiversity
found at the RPPN-FMA represents an important attractive for research,
environmental awareness and ecotourism activities. Ecotourism in the
RPPN-FMA has the potential to become an important tool for ensuring
forest protection and providing a sustainable income for the area.
The fauna and specially the primates are habituated to human presence,
hence spotting animals is quite easy. Of particular interest is the
muriqui. It may rapidly become the "mountain gorilla" of
South American ecotourism and Caratinga is the only place on earth
where visitors can observe this highly endangered primate on a short
visit. This is a feature of great attraction for tourists that makes
the Reserve useful in public environmental awareness efforts and to
increase revenues to help support local research. |
