The Society for Muriqui's Preservation, “Preserve-Muriqui”
is a non profitable entity, located in Caratinga's Municipal district,
founded by initiative of the Abdala's family and with widespread support
from the local community.
Its primary goal is to continue with the conservationist work of Mr.
Feliciano Abdala, preserving a forest of about 900 ha that once belonged
to his Farm, Montes Claros, which was transformed in the Natural Patrimony
Private Reserve Feliciano Abdala, where survives the biggest population
of the northern muriqui (Brachyteles hypoxanthus). Muriqui-of the-north
is considered as species critically endangered and one of the 25 primates
most threatened of the world.
Our mission is to continually seek a long term solution to guarantee
muriqui-of the-north preservation and its natural environment, with
emphasis in the long duration research that supplies solid bases to
consubstantiate the handling plan of the Reserve and the activities
involving the neighbors’ properties of the reserve. Our perspective
is to promote joint work between researchers, producers and inhabitants
of the neighboring properties and of the local communities, in the
development of a series of activities that aims at job and income
generation inside a context of natural resources preservation and
sustainable rural development.
